We often think of windows in terms of basic functionality; they allow natural light to enter the home and its inhabitants to view the world from within. However, your windows do so much more than simply provide a nice view.
Properly installed energy-efficient windows play an important role in maintaining a comfortable indoor climate by regulating thermal transfer. This means they help to keep the cool air inside during the spring and summer and the warm air inside during the fall and winter months.
High-quality windows also enhance the security of your home and go a long way toward reducing noise pollution, which is why it is so important to take good care of your newly installed windows. Below are three simple things you can do to ensure your new windows continue to look beautiful and function optimally for years to come.
Clean your windows regularly (not just the glass).
A good rule of thumb is to clean your windows twice a year. This includes cleaning the glass, frames, and screens.
To help prevent streaking, wait for an overcast day to clean the glass panes, or aim for later in the day when there is no direct sunlight. Clean your windows from top to bottom, and avoid spraying too much cleaning solution at once, which can damage the frames. Never pressure-wash your windows, as this may cause damage to both the glass and frames.
Vinyl, aluminum, and wood window frames may all be cleaned with mild soap and water. (You want to avoid harsh chemical cleansers because they can damage the finish of your window frames.) After cleaning, make sure you dry the surface thoroughly with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. High-quality wood frames will be treated with a water-resistant finish, but it is still best to wash and dry them quickly to avoid water damage.
To clean your window screens, you can also use mild soap and water. Gently scrub the screens with a soft brush, rinse with clear water, and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth.
Periodically check window seals.
Leaky window seals can lead to all kinds of problems, including moisture buildup and mold growth, unwanted drafts, damage to the window frames, and fluctuations in indoor air temperature.
At least once a year, do a thorough inspection of your windows to make sure there are no cracks or gaps where light or air may be coming in. (You can check for drafts using a lit candle or incense stick around the frame.) Also look for areas of loose, discolored, or missing sealant, and examine your window panes for any signs of moisture in between.
Keep window tracks clean and moving components lubricated.
Regularly clean any dust and debris from your window tracks to ensure your new windows continue to open and close smoothly. You may also apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to ensure smooth operation.
Likewise, keep an eye on your window hinges, locks, and other moving parts and lubricate as necessary to prevent them from sticking.
