When it’s time to shop for window replacements, you may be tempted to customize your own designs. But what if a standard window size could fit your needs? Not only will this option keep your home renovation costs down, but it will simplify the process too.
With that said, it’s worth considering what’s available before opting for made-to-order windows. Here’s the 101 on typical sizes for windows.
About Standard Window Sizes
When a window is installed, it’s placed in a framed space called a “rough opening.” There are certain sizes of rough openings that are frequently used in homes.
Window manufacturers make windows sized for these common spaces. This ensures that most homeowners and contractors can easily find the windows they need.
There isn’t an official or universal list of standard window sizes, though. Some manufacturers may also create windows somewhere in between these common sizes.
It’s a bit like picture frame sizing. Some dimensions are easy to find, like 5×7” or 11×16” frames, for example. These sizes might not work for every photograph or poster, but they’ll work for most. Yet, it’s still possible to buy less popular picture frame sizes or get custom ones made. It’s a similar idea with windows.
Most Common Window Dimensions
There’s a wide range of popular window sizes. Generally, here’s what you can expect to find:
Double Hung Window Sizes
In the United States, double-hung windows are the most popular type of window. They can be used in any room with a space that’s more high than wide.
- Double Hung Width: 2 to 4 feet
- Double Hung Height: 3 to 6 feet
Sliding Window Sizes
Sliding windows open horizontally. They slide or glide, from one side to the other. Because of this horizontal opening, sliding windows are best for openings that are more wide than high. You can often find them in living rooms and kitchens.
- Sliding Window Width: 3 to 7 feet
- Sliding Window Height: 2 to 5 feet
Picture Window Sizes
Picture windows are typically used in living rooms and kitchens. They’re perfect for letting in light and creating a scenic view, but usually don’t open. Therefore, picture windows are manufactured in many sizes.
- Picture Window Width: 2 to 8 feet
- Picture Window Height: 1 to 8 feet
Bay Window Standard Sizes
Bay windows are made of three angled panels. The panels typically form an arc or rectangular shape, creating a cozy nook for reading or relaxing. A bay window also juts out from the house.
Like picture windows, bay windows aren’t designed to be opened. But they can let in ample light and improve the visual aesthetics of a room.
- Bay Window Width: 3 feet 6 inches to 10 feet 6 inches
- Bay Window Height: 3 feet to 6 feet 6 inches
Casement Window Sizes
A casement window is hinged on one side, allowing it to open out and to the side. This style is best for bathrooms, kitchens, or other rooms that call for extra ventilation.
- Casement Window Width: 1 feet 2 inches to 2 feet 11.5 inches
- Casement Window Height: 2 feet 5.5 inches to 6 feet 5.5 inches
Awning Window Sizes
An awning window is hinged on the top. It opens out and up. Awning windows also let in fresh air and can be left open when it’s lightly raining.
- Awning Window Width: 2 inches to 3 feet 10 inches
- Awning Window Height: 1 feet 8 inches to 7 feet 8 inches
