When replacing or installing new windows, choosing the right glass is the most important step.
The best type of glass will keep heat in and out, ensuring that your home is energy efficient and comfortable throughout the year.
That’s why we’re excited to offer LoĒ³-340, a coated solar control glass that provides just that. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is LoĒ³-340?
LoĒ³-340 is a multi-layer glass that minimizes solar heat gain. Specifically, “LoĒ” stands for “low emissivity.”
Like all solar control glass, LoĒ³-340 is made of raw glass coated with multiple layers of metallic particles, including silver, zinc, and titanium. These materials reflect the sun’s energy and control ultraviolet (UV), visible light, and near infrared (NIR).
To start, LoĒ³-340 blocks approximately 98% of UV radiation. Not only will this protect your family from harmful UV rays, but your carpet, curtains, and other furnishings will be less likely to fade, too.
It also absorbs and reflects 60% of visible light. The result is a soft blue hue that reduces glare, so it’s easy on the eyes. Yet, because it has a high light to solar gain ratio of 2.17, you can still enjoy plenty of natural light.
Lastly, LoĒ³-340 blocks nearly 100% of near infrared (NIR) light. These invisible solar infrared rays can damage the eyes and make you feel warm, but LoĒ³-340 can keep them out.
How does LoĒ³-340 compare to clear or tinted glass?
To put things into perspective, clear glass offers very little protection against solar transmission. It releases 84% of heat into the home.
Tinted glass does a better job at blocking light. However, since it works by absorbing energy, it can become hot to the touch. There’s also a higher risk for cracks caused by thermal stress.
If you want to use tinted glass at the level of LoĒ³-340’s glare control, it would have to be quite thick—1/4 inch, to be exact. Even then, it wouldn’t be able to block energy as well as LoĒ³-340.
LoĒ³-340 lets you enjoy thermal comfort all year around.
When you live in the desert, the all-climate control of LoĒ³-340 is essential.
During the long summer months, LoĒ³-340 will cool down your home by blocking solar heat gain. Come winter, LoĒ³-340 will minimize energy loss (and keep heat inside) when temperatures drop at night.
In turn, you’ll have the perfect setup for a comfortable and energy efficient home.
